Where dog training is fun!
I understand that every dog is unique and requires individualized training. That's why I offer customized training programs that are tailored to meet your dog's specific needs and goals. I love creating a deeper connection with people and their pets through customized training and helping pet owners understand their dog's needs, wants and desires. Those needs, wants and desires change as your dog ages. I can help you navigate any unwanted behavior changes.
As a parent and dog owner, I understand these challenges and meet them with compassion and experience.
As dog owner for over 40 years, and a professional, certified trainer for over 10 years, I have personally dealt with ADA recognized service dog training, housebreaking issues, reactivity, fearful dogs, aggressive behavior displays, conflict between dogs, introducing new pets, separation anxiety, noise phobias, dangerous prey drives, enrichment challenges, obedience, nose work, Rally, Agility, socialization, property destruction, tricks training, door dashing, hole digging, dogs that won't listen, dogs that don't like their nails cut and intense dog behaviors that may benefit from the professional advice of trained veterinarian behaviorists.
Graduate of Animal Behavior College, Certified Canine Good Citizen Evaluator for the AKC, Certified Professional Dog Trainer through CCPDT, Certified Force Free Trainer, and Certified Trick Dog Instructor, I'm constantly expanding my knowledge through annual Continuing Education. You will begin training your puppy from the moment you bring it home. Puppies start learning at birth and handling and socialization should begin right away. Socialization is the key to ensuring you have a happy, confident and well-adjusted dog. During your puppy's first three months of life they will experience a socialization period that will permanently shape their future personality and how they will react to their environment as an adult dog. Don't wait! Start today!
From day one, you need to contain and supervise your dog to achieve errorless house training. If they never have the opportunity to learn they can potty on the living room rug, they never will use your rug as a toilet. Keep them from learning habits you don't want. Additionally, it's important to give them ample opportunities to eliminate in a chosen spot and reward them immediately with a food reward. This will have your dog looking forward to getting onto the leash and going to the chosen spot to eliminate and get a yummy treat immediately - don't wait until you walk into the house, reward on the spot.
Punishment will not change your dog's behavior in the way that you desire; your dog will only associate other things with why it's getting punished and it will hinder the bond between you and your dog. Punishment can inhibit your dog's natural behavior, cause depression and avoidance. Instead of hitting or shouting at your dog, you should ignore them or withdraw your attention. Since dogs respond to positive reinforcement, your dog will quickly learn what behaviors to avoid. Remember, your dog is not maliciously trying to disobey you. Being left out or ignored helps them reconsider their actions.
Typically, I come to your home, where the behavior is taking place. Through observation and communication, we will fashion a training program that will extinguish the behaviors you don't like and reinforce the behaviors you do want. I don't have packages or contracts because I don't know how long it will take you to reach your goals, but if you follow the training protocol and do your homework, you won't need me. My goal is work myself out of a job. I don't offer a guarantee, no dog trainer should, because we are dealing with many factors, but I can guarantee that you will see improvement in behavior while I am there.
Dog training is a science, but the industry is unregulated with no licensing requirements or regulatory oversight. That's where independent certification comes into the picture. Look for designations such as CPDT-KA, CPDT-KSA, CBCC-KA. These designations indicate that a trainer has passed a comprehensive exam and has at least 300 hours of dog training experience. Browse the trainer's website and other marketing materials. Does everything look and sound professional? Can the trainer answer your questions about training, behavior and methods knowledgeably and clearly? Do they have experience working with the problems you need help with? Can they provide references from clients? If a trainer focuses on a training model of "dominant" and "alpha" or uses punishment based methods, that trainer doesn't meet the standards of science-based training.
Whether your issue is house training or aggressive displays of behavior, we can help you. Don't give up because it seems insurmountable.
